Gustavo Aceves

Mexico, 1957. Lives and works in Pietrasanta (Italy).

Background:

In 2008 Gustavo Aceves took part in the first edition of the Beijing Biennial of Contemporary Art, invited by the President of the Italian Center for Arts and Culture Dr. Vincenzo Sanfo.

Aceves participates in the Beijing Biennial with a triptych entitled “Bamboo” and on that occasion he meets Francesco Buranelli, former Director of the Vatican Museums and later Secretary of the Pontifical Commission for the Cultural Heritage of the Church.

The Government of the People’s Republic of China invites him to hold a personal exhibition inside the Forbidden City and its Imperial Temple.

October 2010

In 2010 he created the Murales “Proper Names” at the Museum of Memory and Tolerance in Mexico City, with which he pays homage to the philosopher Emmanuel Lévinas by means of a large fingerprint on which the three main phrases of the Letter of human rights are inscribed: ” … No one will be tortured, no one will be persecuted, no one will be exiled, no one. ”

July 2011

In July 2011 Gustavo Aceves participates in the Vatican in the celebratory ceremony on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the priesthood of Pope Benedict XVI, the only Latin American artist alongside artists from 60 countries, including Santiago Calatrava, Zaha Hadid, Peter Greenaway, Bob Wilson and Arvo Part.

The meeting seals the Church’s renewed commitment to dialogue with contemporary artists of international level.

The “Resurrection” sculpture becomes part of the permanent collection of the Vatican Museums.

The “Lapidarium” project:

Pietrasanta work in progress

March 22, 2014:

“Lapidarium – Work in Progress” is inaugurated in Pietrasanta.

The First Monumental Horse is exhibited, together with three Heads, inside the Church of Sant’Agostino.

Five green patinated bronzes are exhibited inside the main courtyard of the Cloister of Sant’Agostino.

A monumental asphalt head is exhibited inside the bell tower.

In the square of the bell tower, 4 horses of different materials are exhibited, such as steel, white bronze and traditional bronze patinated in black.

May 10, 2014:

The second Monumental Horse in white bronze is presented in Piazza delle Armi in Pietrasanta.

24 May 2014:

The Work in Progress exhibition closes with the third Monumental Horse as a symbol of Mare Nostrum, located at the rotunda of the Marina di Pietrasanta pier, and with the contemporary exhibition of 19 horses made of resin, various materials and sand from Marina di Pietrasanta.

2 – 10 May 2015

The open-air exhibition “Lapidarium – to overcome borders”, which features numerous life-size equestrian sculptures, is located exactly in front of the Quadriga of the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin. The exhibition is part of “May’45 – Spring in

Berlin ”for the celebrations of the 70th anniversary of the end of the Second World War.

Exhibition at the Brandenburg Gate, Berlin, 2 – 10 May 2015

On the occasion of the celebrations of “May’45 – Spring in Berlin” Gustavo Aceves creates a project with life-size horses for Pariser Platz, in front of the Brandenburg Gate. His sculptures are placed just on the opposite side of the Quadriga from the Brandenburg Gate, which symbolizes the history of Germany in all its aspects: almost completely destroyed, its condition describes the end of the Second World War and marks the beginning of the division of the city, of Germany and Europe, while its belated reconstruction during the 1990s stands as a symbol of reunification, the development of Germany, reconciliation and mutual understanding.

The sculptures carry proof of their journey: migration, asylum request, immigration.

2015 marks the 70th anniversary of the day of liberation from the Nazi-fascist dictatorship: a reason to commemorate the victims and to reflect on our political and cultural present in Europe and in the world, addressing issues such as separation, borders and migration.
